High Middle Ages (1001 – 1299 CE)

GDFB Global
The High Medieval Ages were characterized by a civilatory advance and military expansion of Europe. This time was truly the age of maille and is identified between the 11th Century to end of 13th Century. The Norman hauberk seen at Hastings grew to fully cover the arms and hand and the skirts sometimes extended beyond the knee toward the ankle. Helmets became more protective - often sacrificing vision for safety. The classic nasal helm evolved into helmets such as the chapel-de-fer and helmets with faceplates - eventually culminating in the great helm. The development of western armour in this period was heavily influenced by combat conditions against the Muslims in Iberia and the Holy Land.

GDFB Global High Middle Ages Clothings & Shoes
The turning point in medieval fashion came in the eleventh century. Emerging monarchies in France, England, and Spain created courts, where wealth was spent on fashionable clothes. These monarchies sent knights and soldiers on religious crusades to the Middle East beginning in 1090, and the returning crusaders brought with them ideas for clothes and shoes from the developed societies of the Byzantine Empire (476–1453 CE) and beyond from the Near East. These influences brought a revolution in fashion. Wealthy people could afford to have their servants modify their clothings and shoes, and they helped invent several new fashions, including hose for men\'s legs, robes were now made in separate pieces of fabric. Currently we have few but authentic pieces of Clothings and Shoes for this period.

GDFB currently has developed various helmets from this period. This development has been carried out with the help of Mike Trevor, Historical Researcher for GDFB Global/Indian Handicrafts & Textiles Syndicate and Martin Bavin from A Plaisance. Among our models are Faceplate Flat Top Helmets, Great Helms.

GDFB Global High Middle Ages Weapons
During the high middle ages, the three most prevalent weapons were the sword, the battle-axe and the spear, however, the crossbow rapidly gained popularity. Combined with the increased prevalence of horse warfare (which eased movement and gave an advantage to its warring riders who carried spears) and the introduction of massive siege engines, these hand-held weapons allowed invaders like the Normans to overawe less technologically-advanced people. The peasants, on the other hand, generally fought back with the only weapons in their possession: the tools that they used to till their fields and tend their homes - hayforks, flails, sickles, axes, clubs with spikes, and boar-spears. Interestingly, these same tools eventually became an integral part of the weapons inventory of most armies. Currently we have small but selected collection of spreaheads and axes in Middle Ages Weapons, which shall shortly be enhanced.
