Early Middle Ages Helmets

The most widely used type of helmets were the Spangenhelm and the Conical Shaped Nasal Helmet. During the Viking Age both, the Spangenhelms and the Spectacle Helms were used. GDFB currently has developed various helmets for this period. This development has been carried out with the help of Mike Trevor, Historical Researcher for GDFB Global/Indian Handicrafts & Textiles Syndicate and Martin Bavin from A Plaisance.

Coppergate helmet with Butted Aventail

Named after the Coppergate in York where it was fund. Made with 14 Gauge Steel with leather inserts and chin straps. Decorated with historically correct brass pieces. Latin Inscriptions on brass strips across the helmet top. Avantail is made of butted chainmail.

This design was common throughout the 11th century in Europe among the Normans and Vikings. It is constructed from 1.6mm (16 gauge) steel and has an adjustable, spider style, leather liner and chinstrap.
